Gold Star Dad Arrested For Heckling Biden During State of the Union

Gold Star dad Steve Nikoui was arrested and just charged with a misdemeanor Thursday night for heckling Joe Biden during his angry and divisive State of the Union speech.

Nikoui is the father of Marine Lance Cpl. Kareem Nikoui, one of the 13 service members who was killed outside the Kabul International Airport during the botched withdrawal from Afghanistan on August 26, 2021. He came as a guest of Rep. Brian Mast (R-Fla.).

When Biden declared “all Americans deserve to be safe,” it was apparently too much for still grieving dad.

“Abbey Gate, Abbey Gate!” Nikoui yelled, in reference to the location of the bomb blast at the airport. After Biden said “it’s safer now than when I took office,” the enraged dad hollered “United States Marines!”

Gold Star families of the troops killed in Kabul have been been among the loudest voices blasting Biden for his handling of the withdrawal. In the months after the tragedy, the families were quite vocal about Biden’s failure to meet with them.

Nikoui was arrested by Capitol Police and ushered out of the chamber after his outburst.

“Tonight at approximately 10:15 p.m., a man disrupted the State of the Union Address by yelling,” a Capitol Police spokesperson told Axios.

“Our officers warned him to stop and when he did not, the man was removed from the House Galleries and was arrested.”

“The Sergeant at Arms is holding my State of the Union guest for yelling at [Biden] in protest because his son was killed in action at the Abbey Gate due to Biden’s incompetence,” Mast said in a post on X. “So much for the right to petition our government for the redress of grievances.”

Nikoui was charged with a misdemeanor charge of “crowding, obstructing or incommoding,” the Capitol Police spokesperson said.

In D.C., the public is prohibited from protesting “in an area where it is otherwise unlawful to demonstrate” and continuing “after being instructed by a law enforcement officer to cease.”

The Gold Star dad is facing a fine of up to $500 and 90 days in prison.

Nikoui wasn’t the only person who disrupted the SOTU speech. Biden drew boos and catcalls after he admonished Republicans to pass the “Border Protection” bill that stalled in the House.

The Senate bill would actually increase illegal immigration and allow the Department of Homeland Security to place new border-crossers on a fast-track to US citizenship. The Senate bill would also require the release of asylum seekers before their claims have been determined as credible.

Republicans say Biden can easily revoke the 94 executive actions he signed when he took office, which unraveled all of former President Trump’s effective border security policies.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) hollered “Say her name!”—referring to Laken Riley, the 22-year old nursing student who was murdered by an illegal alien on the campus of the University of Georgia, last month.

“Lincoln … Lincoln Riley, an innocent young woman who was killed by an illegal,” Biden said, holding up a button and failing to say her name correctly twice. He then appeared to make the Republicans’ point about the border crisis by shouting angrily: “But how many thousands of people are being killed by illegals?!”

During an interview on CNN after the speech Thursday, Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.)  criticized Biden for using the word “illegal” instead of “undocumented.”
