In addition to announcing stricter federal vaccine mandates Thursday afternoon, Joe Biden, in a speech that was derided on social media as “tyrannical,” authoritarian,” and “un-American,” unveiled a plan to force all private businesses with more than 100 employees to make their workers get inoculated with the experimental COVID vaccines, or face weekly testing.
During his remarks, Biden repeated his talking point that COVID-19 in the United States—where cases continue to surge amid high vaccination rates—is now a “pandemic of the unvaccinated,” and vowed to protect vaccinated employees from the unvaccinated ones.
In his speech, Biden pitted Americans against each other, praising those who have done “the right thing” and gotten vaccinated, and scapegoating the 80 million who have weighed the risks and benefits of vaccination, and have come to a personal decision not to get injected. “That 25 percent minority” he said, “can cause a lot of damage, and they are.”
“What more is there to wait for? What more do you need to see? We’ve made vaccinations free, safe, and convenient,” Biden continued. “We’ve been patient but our patience is wearing thin and your refusal has cost all of us,” Biden intoned.
He also issued a veiled threat to Republican governors who have resisted imposing tyrannical measures on their constituents. “If these governors won’t help us beat the pandemic, I’ll use my power as president to get them to,” he said.
Biden concluded his remarks by whispering weirdly, “get vaccinated,” and then left the podium without taking any questions.
Biden’s draconian mandate on employers has inspired some pointed responses from Republicans.
GOP Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel accused him of “forcing an unconstitutional, un-American federal decree on businesses and families.”

GOP Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy correctly noted that Biden, like his former boss Barack Obama, “has made small business an enemy of his administration,” and predicted his mandate will “crush an economy” he has already put on life support.
President Biden has made small business an enemy of his administration. Forcing main street to vax or pay a fine will not only crush an economy he's put on life support—it's flat-out un-American.
To Joe Biden, force is more important than freedom. Americans won't stand for it.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis responded to Biden’s draconian mandates during a press conference Thursday afternoon.
“How could we get to the point in this country where you would not let them earn a living because of their choice on the vaccine? I just think that’s fundamentally wrong. I do not believe that people should lose their jobs over this issue, and we will fight that,” he said.
“I just think that the more this becomes coercive, where people have threatened mandates, and firing, and business consequences, the more he does that, the more people it alienates,” DeSantis added. “I do not believe people should lose their jobs over this issue, and we will fight that.”
DeSantis went on to say that he didn’t think the White House had the authority to impose a rule like that on employers.
“We would obviously support protections for people who just want to earn a living,” he said.

Ohio candidate for U.S. Senate JD Vance called for mass civil mass civil disobedience in response to Biden’s mandates. “Do not comply with the mandates. Do not pay the government fines. Don’t allow yourself to be bullied & controlled. Only mass civil disobedience will save us from Joe Biden’s naked authoritarianism.”

Biden’s speech comes amid a collapse in his approval numbers in the wake of the administration’s disastrous military withdrawal from Afghanistan, which led to the deaths of 13 U.S. servicemen, 60+ billion dollars worth of U.S. weapons in the hands of the Taliban, hundreds of stranded Americans, and thousands of stranded Afghan allies. It also comes amid an ongoing crisis at the U.S.-Mexico border, and skyrocketing inflation.
When Biden traveled to New York and New Jersey earlier this week to survey the hurricane damage, and was heckled by some locals.
“Resign, you tyrant,” one person could be heard shouting at Biden during a stop in suburban NJ.
Over the weekend, college football fans in multiple stadiums across the country chanted “F-ck-you Biden.”
Update:
Multiple Republican governors vowed to fight Biden’s executive overreach.
The Biden Administration’s recent announcement seeking to dictate personal freedom and private business decisions is an insult to our American principles of individual liberty and free enterprise.
(1/3)— Governor Mike Parson (@GovParsonMO) September 9, 2021
Vaccination protects us from serious illness, but the decision to get vaccinated is a private health care decision that should remain as such. My administration will always fight back against federal power grabs and government overreach that threatens to limit our freedoms. (3/3)

Nebraska will stand up to President Biden’s overreach, and we will be working with the Attorney General to explore all our options.https://t.co/LHaWPvEAo0

South Dakota will stand up to defend freedom. @JoeBiden see you in court.
— Governor Kristi Noem (@govkristinoem) September 9, 2021
The Biden Administration’s announcement to mandate COVID-19 vaccinations or weekly testing for private businesses is an egregious example of big government overreach. Our Constitution was written and fought for to protect our liberties as American citizens. 1/3
— Governor Mark Gordon (@GovernorGordon) September 9, 2021
I have asked the Attorney General to stand prepared to take all actions to oppose this administration’s unconstitutional overreach of executive power. It has no place in America. Not now, and not ever.
— Governor Mark Gordon (@GovernorGordon) September 9, 2021
Today’s actions from President Biden amount to government overreach. Government should stay out of decisions involving employers and their employees as much as possible. I’ve advocated for and championed fewer government regulations and mandates on business.
— Brad Little (@GovernorLittle) September 9, 2021
President Biden is taking dangerous and unprecedented steps to insert the federal government even further into our lives while dismissing the ability of Iowans and Americans to make healthcare decisions for themselves. (1/3)
— Gov. Kim Reynolds (@IAGovernor) September 9, 2021
As I’ve said all along, I believe and trust in Iowans to make the best health decisions for themselves and their families. It’s time for President Biden to do the same. Enough is enough. (3/3/)
— Gov. Kim Reynolds (@IAGovernor) September 9, 2021
Safe, effective vaccines remain our best tool for preserving hospital capacity and ensuring access to care, but forcing a vaccine mandate on private employers is not the role of the state or federal government.
— Gov. Doug Burgum (@DougBurgum) September 9, 2021
The President has no authority to require that Americans inject themselves because of their employment at a private business. The vaccine itself is life-saving, but this unconstitutional move is terrifying. This is still America, and we still believe in freedom from tyrants.

Update:
Texas Governor Greg Abbott issued an executive order Thursday evening designed to protect Texans from Biden’s power grab.
“Biden’s vaccine mandate is an assault on private businesses. I issued an Executive Order protecting Texans’ right to choose whether they get the COVID vaccine & added it to the special session agenda,” Abbott tweeted. “Texas is already working to halt this power grab.”
