Florida Congresswoman to Propose Bill Banning the Display of Foreign Flags in Congress

A Republican Congresswoman plans to introduce a bill that would forbid the waving of foreign flags inside Congress after a viral video circulated of dozens of members waving Ukrainian flags following a vote to pass another Ukrainian aid package.

As Breitbart reports, Congresswoman Kat Cammack (R-Fla.) announced the planned legislation following the unexpected display of a foreign nation’s flag on the floor of the House, which was widely mocked on social media.

“Watching American representatives pass out & wave Ukrainian flags in the United States House of Representatives chamber infuriated me,” said Cammack in a post on X. “As we speak, my team is drafting legislation that will prohibit the display of foreign nations’ flags on the House floor.”

The incident took place shortly after the House overwhelmingly voted in favor of yet another aid package to the war-torn nation, this time to the tune of $61 billion. While most members simply waved small, handheld flags, others took it even further; Congressman Bill Pascrell (D-N.J.) had a full-sized Ukrainian flag draped around his shoulders as he cast his vote in favor of the bill.

Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (R-La.) denounced the waving of the flags as being “in violation of decorum.”

“These are not normal times here in the House or around the world, as we all know,” Johnson later told reporters after the vote. “And, we saw a disturbance here on the House floor just a bit ago. I just want to say simply what I think most people around the country understand and agree, we should only wave one flag on the House floor. And I think we know which flag that is.”

The Ukraine aid was one of several major bills passed by the House of Representatives on Friday, alongside a bill that would potentially ban the Chinese social media app TikTok, as well as additional aid packages to Israel and Taiwan.
