Whitworth is in the process of transitioning to female, a spokesman for the D.A.’s office said.
He has been formally charged with the following offenses:
Criminal attempt to commit murder in the first degree (two counts)
Criminal mischief
Menacing
Interference with staff, faculty, or students of educational institutions
The 19-year-old is being held on a $75,000 bond.
A Colorado Springs school district spokesman told KRDO that the suspect attended school in the district between 2014 and 2016, and he attended both in-person and the district’s Homeschool Academy.
Police were dispatched to the Whitworth’s residence after his sister called and claimed that he had been behaving violently and talking about school shootings. According to the affidavit, the sister referred to William as “lily” and used “she/her” pronouns.
Deputies found him in his bedroom “lying in bed, drunk, in a room piled with trash that had several holes in the wall,” according to the affidavit.
Police also reportedly found a notebook “with instructions on how to make firearms using a 3D printer and how to build rudimentary bombs.” Whitworth also reportedly admitted to watching YouTube videos on how to craft a detonator.
Additionally, deputies found a whiteboard with a floor plan to Timberview Middle School amongst Whitworth’s belongings, and a “detailed” hit list of people he was planning to murder.
While Timberview was described as his “main target,” two other high schools were also reportedly listed as “targets” in other notebooks.
When asked why he wanted to commit mass murder, Whitworth told police that there was “no specific reason,” but that he was getting close to carrying out his plans.
The arrest of Whitworth follows the Nashville school shooting on March 27, 2023, which was perpetrated by a biological female who identified as male, and several other shootings that were perpetrated by trans assailants.
