Like an ex-journalist and current lush from Pamplona who thinks no one knows he’s loaded because he guzzles vodka—we’ll call him Ernie—the legacy media is oblivious to how poorly their hollow claims to objectivity mask the stench of their bias. But if there was any doubt about the origins of the odor, venerable Fox News senior political analyst Brit Hume is on hand to disabuse the lesser lights of his profession of the notion that no one knows they stink:
I wonder if the editors at the Washington Post have any idea that such headlines have been an object of ridicule for years among conservatives. The focus, as always, is never the behavior of the Left, only the reaction to it on the Right.
The headline Hume references is “As Democrats talk liberal positions, GOP pounces” (which is a variation on the original Washington Post story, bearing the title “Republicans seize on liberal positions to paint Democrats as radical”).
In addition to Hume’s point about ignoring and/or normalizing the Left’s outre behavior, which instigates sane opposition to it, such biased “GOPounce” headlines also turn instigators into martyrs. Indeed, this past week saw the birth of an instant classic in GOPounce propaganda: “Del. Kathy Tran was known for nursing her baby on the House floor. Now she’s getting death threats over abortion.”
As with the deadenders who cling to the lie that the Covington kids are guilty of something and deserving of being doxxed out of their “polite” society, the mass of the elitist media refuses to recognize it has a bias problem; rationalizes it away; and squanders its journalistic legacy of objectivity in a tawdry exchange for the cheap clicks of hypocrisy.
No, we can’t save them from themselves. But we would be heartless not to encourage them truly to understand their plight; and, perhaps, help them find the courage to take that first step toward recovering their objectivity.
Maybe by distancing ourselves from the contentious present and venturing back to another American era when the Democrats hated a president and his party almost as much as they do today, we could provide a few inarguable examples that show how ridiculous and injurious their bias—such as GOPounce propaganda—is to themselves and their profession?
Yes! For the sake of our common humanity, let’s hark back to that fiery crucible and take that flying [leap] at a rolling donut:
“As Democrats talk secession, GOP pounces.”
“Republicans seize on Copperhead positions to paint Democrats as radical.”
“Former Sen. Jefferson Davis was known for being a veteran, farmer and widower. Now he’s getting death threats over state’s rights.”
Still not moved to commence a fearless introspection let alone make amends, my elitist journalist acquaintances? Then try this bonus example of GOPounce propaganda, the “Overseas Appeal,” wherein the media lashes out not only against the Republicans’ reaction, often specifically the president’s, but further salts their wounds with some posh foreigner’s haughty disapproval:
His weak, wishy-washy, namby-pamby efforts, imbecile in matter, disgusting in manner, have made us the laughing stock of the whole world. The European powers will despise us because we have no better material out of which to make a president.
Huh, what? You’re kidding, right? No s—
Ahem. This last quote was an actual one from central Illinois’ Salem Advocate. Circa 1861.
Hmm . . .
OK, so that blessed day of recognition and redemption for the elitist media may be more distant than desired. But some day, surely, the our press will realize its leftist bias and pounce at the chance to recover its objectivity—if not for its audience’s sake, then at least for its own?
“Yes,” said Jake (Tapper), “isn’t it pretty to think so?”
