David French, Ruling Class Pawn

The giddycon “Right” is absolutely overjoyed over the news regarding Paul Manafort and Michael Cohen. David French, as usual, is all too happy to get yet another chance to shame his favorite group: Trump voters.

But contra French, the choice isn’t between Trump or Pence. It’s between republican government or bowing down at the feet of the wilful ruling class gods.

What exactly has Trump done that gets anywhere near the “high crimes and misdemeanors” threshold for impeachment? Could Trump have violated our country’s dense web of campaign finance laws? As Daniel McCarthy points out, “Is it in fact a ‘campaign contribution’ if your client is a candidate for office and you pay for a woman to keep quiet about an affair with him?” No. And even if the FEC opens a case, it’s extremely unlikely to be resolved in the near future.

Also, what makes French think the Left will stop if they get Trump’s scalp? They won’t stop until the steaming rubble of the Republican Party is being cleared away by bulldozers. And what about Trump’s voters, who would throw up their hands in disgust and walk away from politics if the Republicans helped to remove Trump from office? No word about them.

French acts as though he’s posing some ethical trolley problem rather than discussing something that affects flesh and blood people. An actual country is at stake. Some of us actually want to be able to deliver the blessings of liberty we have left to our posterity. Yet French only sees another opportunity to shame his supposed inferiors. What morality. What principles.

About Tom Doniphon

Tom Doniphon is not, as you may imagine, an iconic character from John Ford's greatest western. He is, rather, a writer in the Midwest. The moniker, suffice to say, is a pseudonym.
