The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) announced on social media that it has ordered the cancellation of over 200,000 credit cards that were being used by federal agencies.
As reported by Fox News, the statement on DOGE’s X account declared that it had carried out a “pilot program with 16 agencies to audit unused/unneeded credit cards.”
“After 3 weeks, >200,000 cards have been de-activated,” the statement revealed. “Great progress this past week by @HHSGov [U.S. Department of Health and Human Services] @Interior [U.S. Department of the Interior].”
The advisory board, which is led by Tesla and SpaceX owner Elon Musk, further explained that despite the massive cuts, there were still at least 4.6 million cards and accounts that remained active across multiple federal agencies. These 4.6 million cards were used in at least 90 million unique transactions, thus amounting to approximately $40 billion in spending in fiscal year 2024.
The exact amount of cancelled cards was 204,801, with 171,120 being travel cards and the remaining 33,681 being purchase cards.
Of the 16 agencies involved, the Department of Interior (DOI) was the source of the highest number of cancelled cards, with 20,000 purchase cards and 40,000 travel cards. The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) saw the second-highest amount, with 43,700 travel credit cards and 2,235 purchase cards.
Musk, at the direction of President Donald Trump, is using DOGE to seek out government spending that is determined to be wasteful, as well as federal jobs deemed unnecessary and even entire agencies that have outlived their usefulness. During the first Cabinet meeting of President Trump’s second term, Musk vowed to save at least $1 trillion in wasteful spending, which would contribute immensely to reducing the national debt.
DOGE plans to complete its work by July 4th, 2026, which will be the 250th anniversary of the United States’ Declaration of Independence.
