Trump Halts Tariffs on Mexico Amid Further Discussions with President

On Thursday, President Donald Trump announced that his administration will temporarily delay planned tariffs on imports from Mexico, amid ongoing discussions with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum.

As reported by the Daily Caller, President Trump made the announcement in a post on Truth Social, confirming that the planned 25% tariffs on all imports covered by the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) would be delayed by one month.

“After speaking with President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico, I have agreed that Mexico will not be required to pay Tariffs on anything that falls under the USMCA Agreement,” said the president. “This Agreement is until April 2nd. I did this as an accommodation, and out of respect for, President Sheinbaum. Our relationship has been a very good one, and we are working hard, together, on the Border, both in terms of stopping Illegal Aliens from entering the United States and, likewise, stopping Fentanyl. Thank you to President Sheinbaum for your hard work and cooperation!”

President Trump had announced the 25% tariffs on Mexican and Canadian imports early into his second term, in an effort to force both countries to increase  security on their respective borders. The northern and southern borders of the United States have seen a massive flow of illegal aliens, drugs, and other hazards to the American people in recent years. But since President Trump returned to office, the rate of illegal border crossings have plummeted by well over 90%.

The announcement marks the latest concession from Mexico amid President Trump’s tariff gambit. In early February, less than one month after the tariffs were first announced, Sheinbaum announced that her government would send 10,000 more troops to secure the border between Mexico and the United States. In Canada, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also backed down in the face of looming American tariffs, vowing to implement further border security measures; among other things, Trudeau vowed to appoint a “fentanyl czar,” designate Mexican cartels as terrorist organizations, and launch a joint task force between the U.S. and Canada dedicated to cracking down on border crime.
