On Thursday, a report from the New York Times claimed that the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) has fired multiple employees who were hired by the Biden Administration.
According to the Daily Caller, the claims were made by three anonymous sources. The employees who were laid off were “probationary employees” who had been at the agency for less than two years.
The report comes after Judge Anthony Trenga, U.S. District Court Judge for the Eastern District of Virginia, ruled that CIA Director John Ratcliffe has the authority to fire employees as he sees fit. The ruling was made following a lawsuit by several CIA officers who had been hired by the Biden Administration for the purpose of overseeing diversity and recruitment efforts.
As detailed in the Times report, the laid-off employees were ordered to report to an off-site location without being told the purpose of the appointment. Once they arrived, they were ordered to hand over their security credentials. A handful of key operational areas were exempt from the firings, including officers assigned to security along the southern border, as well as those dealing with threats from China.
In a statement, a CIA spokesman confirmed that “we are reviewing personnel within their first two years of service at the Agency. For some personnel, that process will result in termination.”
“Our officers face unique pressures from working in situations that are fast-paced and high-stakes,” the spokesman added. “It’s not for everyone.”
The firings come after the CIA first outlined plans for mass firings back in February, with the primary focus being employees whose jobs revolved around diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). Similar layoffs are occurring across the federal government, primarily spearheaded by the newly-formed Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led by Tesla and SpaceX owner Elon Musk. At the direction of President Donald Trump, DOGE has been tasked with laying off federal employees whose jobs are determined to be unnecessary, cutting government spending that is considered wasteful, and even abolishing entire agencies whose missions are determined to be redundant or outdated.
