Sanctuary City Mayors Face Tough Questions Over Enabling of Illegal Immigration

Democratic mayors of four so-called “sanctuary cities” spent some time in the hot seat on Wednesday as GOP members of House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform grilled them over their policies which enable illegal immigrants to evade U.S. immigration laws.

Boston Mayor Michelle Wu, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, Denver Mayor Mike Johnston and New York City Mayor Eric Adams faced pointed questions about rising crime rates and the growing burden on taxpayers due to their sanctuary policies which limit cooperation by local law enforcement with federal immigration authorities.

The hearings opened with Rep. James Comer (R-KY) recounting a number of brutal crimes committed in the U.S. by illegal immigrants and telling sanctuary city mayors that their policies  “only create sanctuary for criminals.”

Comer stated, “We cannot let pro-criminal alien policies and obstructionist sanctuary cities continue to endanger American communities and the safety of federal immigration enforcement officers.”

The mayors also faced scrutiny over the use of taxpayer dollars to provide benefits for individuals who have entered the U.S. illegally.

Rep. Virginia Foxx asked each mayor to account for how much money they have spent on accommodating illegal immigrants over the past 4 years.

Boston Mayor Michelle Wu was unable to provide a figure for the amount of taxpayer dollars spent on illegals because her city doesn’t ask for citizenship from individuals receiving benefits.

The mayors of the sanctuary cities maintain that the responsibility for enforcing immigration law falls to the federal government and that they are simply trying to make their communities welcoming places for immigrants.

According to the AP, in yesterday’s hearing, the mayors called upon Congress to pass immigration reform.

However, a growing number of voices, including Elon Musk, are calling for the mayors to be held accountable for breaking the law, including the possibility of being arrested.

Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL) told the mayors that she will be referring them to the Department of Justice for criminal investigation over their sanctuary city policies and their own comments that they are interfering with enforcement of federal immigration law.

Luna told the mayors, “Your policies are hurting the American people.”
