Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) is adding his voice to Elon Musk’s in a call for the U.S. to leave the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) as soon as possible.
Lee has long been a critic of NATO and suggests that the alliance is a “great deal for Europe” but a “raw deal for the America.”
Over the weekend, Lee shared a number of posts on the social media platform X, indicating that now is a good time for the U.S. to exit the organization that is more than 70% funded by American taxpayers.

President Trump has consistently pushed European nations to pay their fair share to support NATO and has argued that the U.S. is carrying too heavy a burden to keep the alliance safe.
Shortly after his inauguration, Trump pushed for NATO members to up their defense spending from 2% to 5% of GDP because the U.S. was protecting the alliance but that NATO members “were not protecting us” in return.
When European Union (EU) members met over the weekend, after the Oval Office spat on Friday between Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky, President Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance, Sen. Lee shared a video clip of the EU leaders meeting and warned that it was, “Time to get America out of NATO–now!”

Zelensky has argued that Ukraine should be allowed to join NATO as a security guarantee against Russia.
The alliance currently has 32 members, including 30 European nations and the United States and Canada.
The Ukrainian president has been pushing hard for NATO membership lately, likely under the belief that any attack by Russia on any member of NATO would result in a call for a unified response by other members of the alliance under Article 5 of the treaty which treats an attack against one member as an attack against all.
European leaders have expressed a willingness to come to Ukraine’s aid without the help of the U.S., if necessary, but there is also the likely expectation that the U.S. would be bound to intervene if another NATO member were attacked by Russia.
The rest of NATO realizes that the US will not permit Ukraine to join. Starmer is attempting to de facto add Ukraine into NATO by putting NATO troops in the line of fire. Trump should halt this gambit by exiting NATO. That’s the only way to avoid the article 5 trap he’s setting. https://t.co/riYre0C3ai

If a trap is, in fact, being laid for the U.S. by members of the E.U. then this may be the time to begin moving toward an exit from NATO.
There are a few pieces here and elsewhere suggesting it is high time the U.S. exit NATO, the U.N. and the other alphabet globalist groups. For the first time, I believe that public opinion may actually sway things, for now we have someone in the White House who is an ally to the American people, not a sycophant for Europe. I suspect we have all been carrying the global deadbeat alliance since the end of WWII and that world order changed after the Soviet Union fell, when we ought to have, but did not change our spending or our posture towards the rest of the world by dismantling NATO. The gravy train was just to attractive and American policy makers too weak in character and lacking in any vision which transcended the lessons and mistakes leading to WWII in the first place.
We must return to the constitutional values cherished by the very wise people who created it. Those are responsible for the highly prosperous country in which so many around the world have found opportunity and freedom. We are at serious risk of losing everything if we cannot put first things first, meaning our own people first and our own principles ahead of any other nation’s or group of nations’ interests. Instead, we have lavished our money and our blood on useless leeches who treat us as a piggy bank and a servant to their needs. In looking around the world for monsters to slay, we have created or let grow armies of them here at home, with the biggest threat coming from the useless leeches in our own corrupt and tyrannical government of bureaucrats, by bureaucrats and for bureaucrats. How many reform-minded people has the blob sabotaged in its efforts to block the return of focus to this country and its problems? Prioritizing our own people and our own power does not make us isolationists. It makes us wise and constitutionalists.
JD Vance’s speech to the Eurotrash community was spot on in its focus on the intentional dismantling of any shared values or principles between Europe and the United States like Free Speech. Having little in common with present-day Europe, and existential issues to address at home, we should do everything possible to get out of Europe, and every other place on the globe that will not confront the origins of its own problems and defeat them, or be prepared to keep bailing them out with more blood and treasure a la Ukraine even at the risk of sinking our country in a sea of the world’s innumerable problems.
It’s not that NATO was not a good idea and/or is now not working. It is that we let it become what it is.
NATO has become a liability for the US; every single member nation, with the exception of Poland and Greece (!) has used its NATO membership as an excuse to redirect their defense budgets into internal social programs. As a direct result, the EU has become increasingly fascistic and unstable. All the current chest- beating on the part of England, Germany and France in reference to Ukraine are due to the mistaken assumption that the US will always be available to save Europe from itself. It is time to withdraw from NATO and possibly renegotiate individual treaties with countries that hold strategic importance for us.
