Elon Musk Recommends American Withdrawal from NATO and UN

Elon Musk, the head of the Trump Administration’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), has publicly called for the United States to officially withdraw from both the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and the United Nations (UN).

As reported by the Washington Examiner, Musk made the statement on his social media platform X after a hostile exchange in the Oval Office on Friday that saw President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance face off against Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The exchange quickly went viral, with many considering it a major blunder in U.S.-Ukrainian relations by Zelensky.

In a series of posts that were extremely critical of Zelensky and other world leaders who continue to support Ukraine in its ongoing war with Russia, Musk first quoted a post saying that “it’s time to leave NATO and the UN,” with Musk simply saying “I agree.”

In another post, quoting one of his own posts featuring a cartoon of a chessboard with all of the pieces bloodied and scattered about except for the rival kings and queens, Musk said “the EU leaders and Zelensky [have] fancy dinners while men die in trenches.” In a post that Musk has since pinned to the top of his X account, quoting one of his own posts from back in 2022, Musk reminded his followers that “what I said over 2 years ago was that Ukraine should seek peace or suffer severe loss of life for no gains. The latter was Zelensky’s choice. Now he wants to do that again. This is cruel and inhumane.”

After a closed-door meeting on Friday, President Trump, Vice President Vance, and Zelensky spoke to reporters in the Oval Office. When Vice President Vance pointed out Zelensky’s lack of gratitude in favor of constant demands for more aid, Zelensky appeared to threaten the U.S. by saying that if they did not support Ukraine, they would “feel” the effects of war. President Trump told Zelensky that he was in no position to make such statements, and that he was “gambling with the lives of millions” and “gambling with World War III.” Zelensky repeatedly tried to talk over President Trump, and was seen frequently rolling his eyes, shaking his head, and muttering under his breath as Trump and Vance spoke.

Following the heated exchange, Zelensky and his entourage were ordered to leave the White House, cancelling the rest of the day’s plans. The lunch that had been prepared for Zelensky and his people was instead given to White House staffers. Many Americans took to social media to celebrate Trump and Vance’s rhetoric in the meeting, with their conduct widely being considered a strong defense of their “America First” agenda in finally standing up to a foreign leader who had become too dependent on American aid.
