The U.S. Military Academy, commonly known as West Point, has disbanded over a dozen student-run clubs that focused exclusively on race and gender, as the Trump Administration seeks to crack down on left-wing identity politics in government and the military.
As ABC News reports, a memo from West Point leadership on Tuesday confirmed that the decision was made “in accordance with recent Presidential Executive Orders, Department of Defense guidance, and the Department of the Army guidance.”
The memo ordered the cancellation of “all sections, meetings, events, and other activities associated with these clubs.” Among the clubs that were shut down were the National Society of Black Engineers, the Society of Women Engineers Club, the Latin Cultural Club, and the Native American Heritage Forum.
The memo also noted that the academy is conducting a full review of all other student clubs on campus to see if any others are not in compliance with the new government standards.
President Donald Trump has vowed to eliminate diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs and practices in the federal government, as these practices overwhelmingly and disproportionately favor non-Whites, as well as women and non-heterosexual people. DEI has been criticized for prioritizing racial, gender, and sexual identity over merit and qualifications, thus leading to the most capable applicants being denied in favor of people who are not qualified for certain positions.
