During a press conference on Tuesday, President Donald Trump said that the United States could soon “take over the Gaza Strip” and rebuild it from the damage it has sustained in the war between Israel and Hamas.
Fox News reports that President Trump made his remarks during a joint appearance with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who was visiting Washington D.C. on Tuesday. Netanyahu is the first world leader to visit President Trump since the beginning of his second term.
“The U.S. will take over the Gaza Strip, and we will do a job with it, too,” said President Trump as he stood alongside Prime Minister Netanyahu. “We’ll own it and be responsible for dismantling all of the dangerous, unexploded bombs and other weapons on the site.”
“Level the site and get rid of the destroyed buildings, level it out, create an economic development that will supply unlimited numbers of jobs and housing for the people of the area,” the president continued. “Do a real job. Do something different. Just can’t go back. If you go back, it’s going to end up the same way it has for 100 years.”
But President Trump also suggested a more long-term plan for Gaza after repairing the damage, hinting at a “long-term ownership position” of the land by the U.S., which could bring greater stability to the Middle East due to the strengthened American presence there.
“I see it bringing great stability to that part of the Middle East and maybe the entire Middle East,” said President Trump. “And everybody I’ve spoken to—this was not a decision made lightly—everybody I’ve spoken to loves the idea of the United States owning that piece of land.”
Developing and creating thousands of jobs with something that will be magnificent in a really magnificent area that nobody would know,” he added. “Nobody can look because all they see is death and destruction and rubble.”
Shortly after his comeback re-election victory in November of 2024, President Trump set out to negotiate a peaceful ending to the war in Israel. After repeatedly making public threats that Hamas would have “Hell to pay” if their American hostages were not released before Trump’s inauguration on January 20th, the Islamic terror group ultimately relented, agreeing to a ceasefire deal and releasing the hostages the day before Trump was sworn back into office.
