On Monday, more than 600 employees of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) were locked out of the agency’s computer systems as well as the agency’s headquarters.
As reported by Fox News, the controversial agency has come under additional scrutiny from billionaire Elon Musk, chairman of the new Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), who has been tasked with cutting wasteful government spending and unnecessary government jobs. In an email sent to USAID employees who were not shut out of the agency’s computer systems, employees were informed that “at the direction of Agency leadership,” the agency’s headquarters “will be closed to Agency personnel on Monday, Feb. 3.”
In an X Space conversation, Musk admitted that President Donald Trump has agreed to the end purpose of completely shutting down USAID. While Musk compared other agencies to an apple contaminated by a worm, he said that USAID is like “a bowl of worms.”
“There is no apple,” the Tesla and SpaceX owner declared. “It’s beyond repair.”
In additional statements posted to X, Musk described USAID as “a criminal organization” and that it is “time for it to die.”
“USAID was a viper’s nest of radical-left Marxists who hate America,” Musk continued.
Despite its title, DOGE is not a federal agency but instead an advisory committee led by Musk, co-founded by Musk and former presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy, who has since left DOGE and is now allegedly planning a gubernatorial run in Ohio. President Trump has said that DOGE plans to submit its final report and see its government-cutting work concluded by July 4th, 2026, which will be the 250th anniversary of American independence.
President Trump has vowed to cut government jobs and spending that are deemed to be wasteful or unnecessary. In addition to USAID, President Trump has also suggested completely eliminating the Department of Education.
