A new memorandum from Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has confirmed that the Texas National Guard now has the authority to carry out arrests for immigration violations.
According to Breitbart, the memorandum of understanding (MOU) was given to the state of Texas by Acting CBP Commissioner Pete Flores, though it has not yet been formally distributed to all Texas authorities along the southern border. The statement confirms that all soldiers with the Texas National Guard will be allowed to conduct patrols and carry out all the same responsibilities as federal immigration agents, as long as they are accompanied by a U.S. immigration officer or Border Patrol agent.
The memo went on to confirm that the ratio of soldiers to immigration officials on any such patrol should be one officer for every four soldiers.
As a result of the memo, at least 3,000 Texas Army National Guard soldiers will be able to carry out arrests, adding to the ranks of ATF agents, FBI agents, and U.S. Deputy Marshals who have already been assigned to assist the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) with carrying out deportations.
Shortly after President Donald Trump’s second inauguration on January 20, arrest authority under Title 8 United States Code was granted to federal law enforcement agencies for the purpose of speeding up the process of cracking down on mass immigration into the United States.
President Trump frequently pledged on the campaign trail to carry out the largest mass deportation operation in American history. He has signed numerous executive orders dealing with immigration, including declaring a national emergency on the southern border, ending the practice of birthright citizenship, and making plans to send as many as 30,000 illegal aliens to the prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
