In the latest confirmation for President Donald Trump’s Cabinet, former Congressman Sean Duffy (R-Wisc.) was approved to be the next Secretary of Transportation.
As The Hill reports, Duffy’s nomination was supported by 77 members of the U.S. Senate, with just 22 voting against him; his nomination was approved unanimously by the Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee, with all 28 members voting in favor.
As Secretary of the Department of Transportation (DOT), Duffy will oversee American travel infrastructure, including highways, railroads, and air travel, among other things. The agency has over 55,000 employees and a budget of over $100 billion.
Duffy had served five terms in the U.S. House of Representatives from Wisconsin’s 7th district, from 2011 to 2019, having first been elected as part of the Tea Party wave in the 2010 midterms. His wife, Rachel Campos Duffy, is a host on Fox News’ weekend show, Fox & Friends Weekend, with Duffy himself making numerous appearances on the network.
Secretary Duffy succeeds former Secretary Pete Buttigieg (D-Ind.), who was widely mocked and criticized as unqualified for the position; during his confirmation hearing, he said that one of his qualifications for the role was that he “liked trains” as a kid. It was widely perceived that he was only given the position due to his being homosexual so that he could claim the mantle of being the first gay Cabinet secretary in American history. Buttigieg was a failed candidate for president in the 2020 election and previously served as mayor of South Bend, Indiana.
Duffy is the sixth Cabinet nominee to be confirmed for President Trump’s second term. The Senate has already confirmed Secretary of State Marco Rubio, CIA Director John Ratcliffe, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem, and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.
