Mark Milley, the disgraced former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, has had his security clearance revoked and his security detail removed amid scrutiny of possible misconduct while in office.
According to the Epoch Times, the order was given by newly-confirmed Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth. The Department of Defense (DOD) announced the decision on January 28th.
“The Secretary has also directed the DOD IG to conduct an inquiry into the facts and circumstances surrounding Gen. Milley’s conduct so that the Secretary may determine whether it is appropriate to reopen his military grade review determination,” said a DOD spokesman in a statement.
In another statement, Hegseth’s Chief of Staff Joe Kasper confirmed that the decision was made in response to Milley’s own admission of planning to commit treason during the first term of President Donald Trump.
“Undermining the chain of command is corrosive to our national security, and restoring accountability is a priority for the Defense Department under President Trump’s leadership,” said Kasper.
After Trump left office the first time, Milley—who continued to serve during the Biden presidency—openly admitted that he intended to warn his Chinese counterpart in the event that President Trump planned military action against the communist nation, an act that would have amounted to treason and thus been punishable by death. Milley received a sweeping pardon from Joe Biden shortly before his departure from office on January 20.
“We don’t take an oath to a wannabe dictator,” Milley said at the time. “We don’t take an oath to an individual. We take an oath to the Constitution, and we take an oath to the idea that is America, and we’re willing to die to protect it.”
Milley had also faced widespread criticism for his lack of leadership during the disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021. President Trump and his nominees for key defense and national security posts have vowed to take disciplinary action against those who were responsible for the failed withdrawal.
