Department of Justice Fires Prosecutors Who Worked on Trump Cases

On Monday, the Trump Administration’s Department of Justice (DOJ) fired several prosecutors who were behind the criminal cases against President Donald Trump.

According to The Hill, at least a dozen prosecutors from the 2020 election case and the so-called “classified documents” case were laid off, with the DOJ admitting that such biased prosecutors could not be “trusted.”

“Today, Acting Attorney General James McHenry terminated the employment of a number of DOJ officials who played a significant role in prosecuting President Trump,” said a DOJ official in a statement. “In light of their actions, the Acting Attorney General does not trust these officials to assist in faithfully implementing the President’s agenda. This action is consistent with the mission of ending the weaponization of government.”

The election case revolved around President Trump’s attempts to expose voter fraud in the 2020 election, as there was widespread evidence and a commonly-held belief among many Americans that fraudulent practices changed the outcome of the election; President Trump’s critics denounced his efforts as an attempt to “overturn” the election.

The documents case involved the discovery of what appeared to be classified documents at President Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida. Although the president’s opponents said he was not authorized to have such documents, the president is indeed allowed to declassify and possess any documents he so chooses. Furthermore, it was eventually revealed that investigators placed fake “Classified” and “Top Secret” cover sheets on top of many documents prior to photographing them, which amounted to tampering with evidence.

Both cases were overseen by Special Counsel Jack Smith. The documents case was dismissed by Judge Aileen Cannon, who determined that Smith was improperly appointed to the position, while Smith himself moved to dismiss the election case following President Trump’s victory in the 2024 election.

The firings were effective immediately on Monday.
