On Friday, President Donald Trump fired 12 federal inspectors general across several government agencies, in the latest of many shakeups in the federal bureaucracy.
As Axios reports, inspectors general were fired from multiple major federal agencies, including the State Department, Department of Defense (DOD), Department of Energy (DOE), Department of Interior (DOI), Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Department of Transportation (DOT), Department of Commerce (DOC), Department of Agriculture (DOA), and the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), as well as the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
At least one of the fired inspectors general, Michael Missal of the VA, sent an email to his staff shortly after being informed of his termination.
“All, I wanted to let you know that I was informed tonight by the White House that I had been fired as the inspector general,” said Missal’s email on Friday. “My understanding is that a number of other inspectors general were also fired.”
Noticeably, the inspector general of the Department of Justice (DOJ) was not among those fired before the weekend.
President Trump has vowed to clear out the federal bureaucracy, including top agencies, of long-time career bureaucrats and officials who are determined to be corrupt or politically-biased. He has also laid off many federal workers who were associated with diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) offices and programs implemented during the Biden Administration.
