The Trump Administration’s Department of Justice (DOJ) has issued a new order mandating that all legal service providers who receive federal funding must stop providing legal assistance for illegal aliens in immigration courts.
According to ABC News, the memo issued on Wednesday ordered any and all federally-funded legal service providers to “stop work immediately” in immigration courts.
“This email is to send you notification to stop work immediately pursuant to the Executive Order on the following task orders,” says the memo. The memo lists such programs as the Legal Orientation Program, the Immigration Court Helpdesk, the Family Group Legal Orientation Program, and the Counsel for Children Initiative.
Such legal service providers that assist in immigration courts are generally trying to assist illegals in their efforts to gain citizenship. The order follows President Trump’s long-standing agenda of reducing immigration into the United States in order to focus more on the needs of American citizens.
“The suspension of these longstanding programs could leave hundreds of thousands of vulnerable immigrants — including children and families — without access to basic legal information and representation,” said a spokesman for the left-wing group Acacia Center for Justice.
The memo comes after a previous report that the DOJ’s Executive Office for Immigration Review has fired four top officials, in yet another move to reduce federal assistance for illegal aliens.
As of the end of the Biden Administration and the beginning of the second Trump Administration, the total backlog of immigration court cases numbers roughly 3.5 million, a record high.
