Pres. Trump Signs Executive Order Withdrawing the U.S. from World Health Organization

After taking his oath of office on Monday, President Trump went to work signing scores of executive orders, including one which ends the U.S.’s membership in the World Health Organization (WHO).

The WHO has been criticized for its guidance and handling of the 2020 coronavirus pandemic and for backing unpopular mask and vaccine mandates.

Trump has also been vocal about the WHO failing to maintain its independence from “inappropriate political influence of WHO member states” and the U.S. having to pay “unfairly onerous payments” that are disproportionate to its population.

The WHO was quick to urge the U.S. to reconsider the pledge to withdraw its membership, saying, “We hope that the United States will reconsider, and we really hope that there will be constructive dialogue for the benefit of everyone, for Americans but also for people around the world.”

NPR reports that the consequences of Trump’s executive order could be significant as the U.S. is the organization’s largest donor, giving more than $1.284 billion to the WHO during 2022 and 2023.

The move to withdraw from the WHO sets a 12 month notice period for the U.S. to leave the organization and to stop all financial contributions.

Trump had given notice and started the paperwork to withdraw from the WHO during his first term but Joe Biden stopped the process on his first day in office on Jan 20, 2021.
