The official portrait of disgraced former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Mark Milley was removed from the Pentagon shortly after President Donald Trump’s second inauguration.
As Breitbart reports, Milley was one of the last people to receive a pardon from Joe Biden before his departure from office. Milley’s portrait was unveiled at the Pentagon just days before the inauguration, thus making its appearance all the briefer after its removal on Monday.
A U.S. official told the New York Times that “the White House” ordered the portrait’s removal.
Milley was known for bringing his left-wing political views into a role that has long been seen as non-partisan. At a congressional hearing, Milley admitted to hating himself for being White, saying that he wanted to “understand White rage.” He also denounced President Trump for using the National Guard to clear out violent rioters who attempted to burn down the historic St. John’s Church in Washington D.C. during the race riots of 2020.
Under the Biden presidency, Milley faced renewed criticism for his failed leadership during the withdrawal from Afghanistan, which saw the complete collapse of the American-backed government and a total takeover by the Taliban. The subsequent hasty exit of U.S. forces led to hundreds of civilian deaths, including 13 American troops who were killed in a suicide bombing in the capital city of Kabul. Neither Milley nor any other military leader faced any kind of retribution for the botched withdrawal.
After President Trump’s first term ended, Milley admitted that he would have informed his Chinese counterpart of any possible military action that President Trump would have taken against them. As this act would have amounted to treason, Milley could have faced the death penalty if he had undergone a court-martial for his actions.
