Shortly after President Donald Trump was sworn back into office, a handful of left-wing activist groups filed lawsuits challenging his efforts to create a new Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
As reported by ABC News, the lawsuits are primarily targeting the fact that DOGE has not yet disclosed its hiring practices, as well as its interactions with preexisting government agencies and other federal entities. One lawsuit demands access to official documents on DOGE’s cooperation with the Trump-Vance transition team.
Despite its formal name, DOGE is set to be less of a federal agency and more of an advisory commission, chaired by billionaire Elon Musk and businessman Vivek Ramaswamy.
The largest lawsuit was filed on Monday by Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW), representing a coalition of teachers’ unions and veterans’ unions. The suit condemns the “creation and secret operation of DOGE,” and demands that the federal district court of Washington, D.C. “block the operation of DOGE until it comes into compliance with the law.”
Another lawsuit was filed by the law firm National Security Counselors (NSC), accusing DOGE of violating the Federal Advisory Committee Act of 1972, which requires advisory committees to hold public meetings.
“Laws have meaning, workers have rights, and real reform requires real accountability,” said an attorney with the NSC. “Denying workers a seat at the table is a good way to make bad policy. My co-plaintiff and I are only asking for what the law demands, which is balance.”
DOGE was created for the purpose of determining which government occupations, including entire agencies, are no longer necessary and should be eliminated. The committee plans to submit its report and shut down no later than July 4th, 2026, which will mark the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
