A celebrated left-wing cartoonist who has repeatedly depicted conservatives as perverted sex abusers was arrested in California Wednesday on child pornography charges.
The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release that Darrin Bell, 49, was connected to an online account that had shared 134 files of child sex abuse, some of which were computer-generated. Police also found child pornography videos at Bell’s home, Wednesday morning, according to the New York Times.
The accused pedophile is the father of four children, according to his biography on Amazon.
Bell, a Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist, is known for the syndicated woke comic strips Candorville and Rudy Park. His left-wing editorial cartoons are syndicated by King Features, which distributes content to nearly 5,000 newspapers. Recurring themes in Bell’s work over the years include Black Lives Matter, LGBTQ+ rights, and anything anti-GOP and anti-Trump.
A review of his Instagram account shows a particular focus on alleged Republican sexual malfeasance, with cartoons viciously targeting former Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.), Governor Ron DeSantis (R-Fla.) and President-Elect Trump specifically.
Bell was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in editorial cartooning in 2019 for obsessively lampooning Trump, or as the Pulitzer Prize Board put it: “For beautiful and daring editorial cartoons that took on issues affecting disenfranchised communities, calling out lies, hypocrisy and fraud in the political turmoil surrounding the Trump administration.”
Bell also won an NAACP Image Award in 2024 for his book, “The Talk,” a memoir touching on his experiences with “police brutality and anti-blackness” growing up in in Los Angeles, California.
He was taken into custody after the search of his home, and is being held at the Sacramento County Main Jail in lieu of $1 million bail.
Bell was charged with two felonies for possession of child sex abuse material, according to jail records.
