Petition Calling for Karen Bass’ Resignation Garners over 92,000 Signatures

An online petition demanding that Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass (D-Calif.) resign from office following her poor response to the southern California wildfires has received over 92,000 signatures.

As Fox News reports, the Change.org petition was started by a user named “Frustrated Californian.” The petition page accuses Bass of “gross mismanagement” before and during the outbreak of multiple fires in southern California, including the city of Los Angeles. Bass was widely mocked and criticized for not even being in her city when the fires broke out, as she was attending a presidential inauguration in the African country of Ghana.

Upon her return from Africa, Bass was confronted by a reporter who asked her multiple questions, only for Bass to remain silent, standing awkwardly still and staring blankly ahead. Bass has also been mocked for a gaffe during a press briefing on relief and assistance efforts, during which she told viewers and listeners to go to “URL,” without actually reading the full URL link.

“Water supplies have been severely strained, billions of taxpayer dollars have been misallocated or left unaccounted for, and countless lives have been lost,” the petition statement reads.

Prior to being elected Mayor of Los Angeles in 2022, Bass was a congresswoman from California’s 37th congressional district, and had previously served as Speaker of the California State Assembly. In the 2020 election, she on the shortlist for Joe Biden’s running mate, before then-Senator Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) was ultimately chosen.

There are five wildfires currently burning through Los Angeles County: Archer, Eaton, Hurst, Kenneth, and Palisades. The fires are estimated to be the costliest in American history, with damages estimated at over $135 billion.

  1. I wish Los Angelenos the best of luck removing Karen “Fidel” Bass from office. But given the nature of California politics, I fear all that will happen is a shuffling of the deck chairs on the Titanic.
