The incoming border czar for the second Trump Administration, Tom Homan, has floated the possibility of using the U.S. military to aid in mass deportation operations.
As reported by Just The News, Homan, the former Acting Director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in the first Trump Administration, mentioned the possible assistance of the military in an interview with the Wall Street Journal.
“It’s something that’s certainly on the table,” said Homan. “We’re waiting to see what Congress is going to give us for funding.”
Using military assets, including bases, to assist with deportations is not without precedent. Both Barack Obama and Joe Biden used military bases to hold illegal aliens, including Latin Americans and Afghan refugees.
Although the military technically cannot be used to arrest illegals, they can provide logistical support such as holding them at bases, or transporting them back to their home countries. Homan reaffirmed this in his interview, saying that the military could serve as a “force multiplier” in deportation operations.
President-elect Donald Trump campaigned heavily on immigration, vowing to finish building the southern border wall and carry out the largest mass deportation operation in American history. He has suggested that he will declare a national emergency on immigration on his first day in office, which will give his administration access to Department of Defense (DOD) funding that Congress otherwise would not approve.
