In a stunning development, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg donated $1 million to President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration committee.
According to Fox Business, Zuckerberg had allegedly promised to make the donation during a November meeting with the president-elect at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida following his comeback victory in the 2024 election.
Zuckerberg, whose company Meta also owns Instagram, also used the meeting with President-elect Trump to demonstrate the company’s latest invention: Ray Ban Smart Glasses. The CEO even gave the president-elect a pair of the glasses as a gift.
Zuckerberg’s relationship with President Trump has been rather tumultuous, with Facebook and Instagram both deliberately censoring attempts in late 2020 to share news articles about the Hunter Biden laptop scandal, a decision that some say influenced the outcome of the election due to the suppression of the October surprise that year.
Subsequently, his platforms banned President Trump after the peaceful protests at the United States Capitol on January 6th, 2021. Both bans have since expired, and President Trump has returned to using both Facebook and Instagram.
The tech CEO also donated millions through his various organizations to administer and oversee election processes in key swing states, overwhelmingly focusing on big cities and other urban areas that heavily favored Democrats, a tactic that has since come to be known as “Zuckerbucks.” He then refused to privately fund any further elections after widespread scrutiny, and stayed out of the 2024 election altogether.
As such, his attitude towards Trump softened in 2024. Following the attempted assassination of the then-former president on July 13th, Zuckerberg described President Trump’s actions in that moment as “bad-ass.”
