President-elect Trump on Wednesday named his former aide Peter Navarro as “Senior Counselor for Trade and Manufacturing” in his next White House term. Navarro was the Director of Trade and Manufacturing Policy for Trump during his first term.
In a Truth Social post announcing the pick, Trump said that “few were more effective or tenacious than Peter in enforcing my two sacred rules, Buy American, Hire American.”
The president-elect added that Navarro also helped him “renegotiate unfair Trade Deals like NAFTA and the Korea-U.S. Free Trade Agreement (KORUS), and moved every one of my Tariff and Trade actions FAST.”
Trump said in a subsequent Truth Social post that the Senior Counselor position will leverage Navarro’s “broad range of White House experience, while harnessing his extensive Policy analytic and Media skills.”
Peter is not just a superb, Harvard-trained Economist, he is a noted author of more than a dozen bestselling books on strategic business management and unfair Trade. He did a superb job for the American People in my First Term. Peter will do even better as Senior Counselor to protect American Workers, and truly Make American Manufacturing Great Again.
Trump also pointed out that Navarro “was treated horribly by the Deep State, or whatever else you would like to call it.”
The 75-year-old was released from a federal prison in Miami less than five months ago, where he was serving a four-month sentence for defying a subpoena from the partisan House select committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021 Capitol riot. He was convicted on two counts of contempt of Congress.
Just hours after his release on July 17, Navarro spoke at the Republican National Convention, where he was met with a standing O and chants of “fight, fight, fight!”
In October, his friend and fellow War Room host Steve Bannon was released from a federal prison in Danbury, Connecticut, where he served a four month sentence for the same reason.
While Democrats continue to bleat about Trump and his allies being “convicted felons,” the American people appear to be tuning it out.
A recent CBS poll showed Trump’s approval rating during the presidential transition at an all time high of 59 percent.
