The Attorney General of Washington D.C. has filed charges against a prominent far-left activist for allegedly misappropriating as much as $75,000 in donations for personal uses.
According to the Washington Free Beacon, Attorney General Brain Schwalb (D-D.C.) alleged in his lawsuit on Monday that Brandon Anderson, the leader of a pro-defund the police nonprofit called Raheem AI, has “misused charitable donations to fund lavish vacations and shopping sprees, and the Raheem AI board of directors let him get away with it.”
Schwalb’s case also seeks to completely shut down Raheem AI itself, and has called for Anderson to be legally prohibited from leading any other nonprofit in the District of Columbia. Schwalb will also seek to have Anderson or Raheem AI repay the $75,000 in full.
“My office will not allow people to masquerade behind noble causes while violating the law,” said Schwalb in a statement on Monday.
Anderson has long advocated for abolishing police departments altogether, and even claimed that Raheem AI was working on an app that would “replace 911 emergency calls.” Despite having raised as much as $4.3 million in the aftermath of George Floyd’s accidental death by a fentanyl overdose in May of 2020, none of Anderson’s promised projects ever came to fruition.
The case against Anderson began when former Raheem AI employees reported financial discrepancies, including bills that Anderson had racked up paying purely for personal items such as clothing and luxury vacations. Employee Jasmine Banks reported that among these expenses were $40,000 in luxury vacation rentals, $10,000 in hotel fees, and $10,000 on designer clothing brands, among others.
Anderson had even lied about the origin of Raheem AI itself, claiming that the group was named after his boyfriend, a man who was allegedly killed by Oklahoma City police. However, an investigation by the New York Times could not locate any record of such a killing involving a man named Raheem in the state of Oklahoma.
