With President-elect Donald Trump set to return to office in January, Democratic governors and local officials have already declared their intentions to oppose his plans to deport illegal aliens and secure the southern border again.
According to the Daily Caller, the governors of California, Illinois, and Massachusetts have all issued statements expressing their pro-amnesty, pro-sanctuary city views as President-elect Trump promises to crack down on illegal immigration.
“I think that the key here is that every tool in the toolbox has gotta be used to protect our citizens, to protect our residents and protect our states, and certainly to hold the line on democracy and the rule of law as a basic principle,” said Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey (D-Mass.). Healey has already declared Massachusetts to be a “sanctuary state” which refuses to cooperate with federal immigration authorities and to welcome illegal aliens with no repercussions.
On Thursday, California Governor Gavin Newsom (D-Calif.) called a special session of the state legislature to discuss how to “protect California values” from the second Trump administration.
“The special session will focus on bolstering California legal resources to protect civil rights, reproductive freedom, climate action, and immigrant families,” read a statement from Newsom’s office. “On immigrant protection, California has advanced policies that support immigrant families and is investing in their protection.” Newsom is widely seen as a top contender for the 2028 Democratic Party nomination following Vice President Kamala Harris’ landslide defeat last Tuesday.
In Illinois, Governor J.B. Pritzker (D-Ill.) said during a press conference that “to anyone who intends to come take away the freedom and opportunity and dignity of Illinoisans, I would remind you that a happy warrior is still a warrior.” He then went on to describe illegal aliens as “my people,” saying “you come for my people, you come through me.”
President-elect Trump has once again made immigration his signature issue, vowing to complete the construction of his wall on the southern border and to carry out the largest mass deportation operation in American history. He has since appointed former Acting Director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Tom Homan as the “Border Czar,” in charge of deportation operations and securing the border.
President-elect Trump and Vice President-elect J.D. Vance (R-Ohio) won the election in a landslide, carrying all seven swing states, winning 312 electoral votes, and receiving over 75 million total votes, marking the first time since 2004 that the Republican ticket won the national popular vote.
