Kamala Harris’ National Security Adviser Investigated for Ties to Iran

A congressional investigation has been launched into Kamala Harris’ national security adviser over his alleged ties to the Iranian government.

According to the Washington Free Beacon, a letter was sent to Harris on Wednesday by Senator Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) and Congresswoman Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.). The letter demanded that the incumbent vice president and presumptive Democratic Party presidential nominee hand over information about Phil Gordon, particularly with regards to his “connections to Ms. Ariane Tabatabai, a senior Department of Defense official who was reportedly involved in an Iranian government operation to expand Tehran’s soft power in the United States.”

The congressional letter points out that Gordon had previously co-authored three opinion pieces with Tabatabai, all of which argued against the use of sanctions on the theocratic and terrorist-backing regime. Tabatabai was exposed last year as a member of an influence network that directly reports to the foreign ministry in Tehran.

The letter claims that Gordon is also “closely associated with the National Iranian American Council (NIAC), another Iranian influence organization that allegedly collaborates with Tehran.” The NIAC played a role in the Obama Administration’s decision to soften relations between the U.S. and Iran, and Gordon spoke at NIAC’s Leadership Conference in 2014 and 2016.

The two lawmakers denounce the fact that Gordon and Tabatabai were “blatantly promoting the Iranian regime’s perspective and interests.” In March of 2020, one such article “claimed continued sanctions on Iran would create ‘catastrophe’ in the Middle East.” Another article “wrote sanctions could lead to new Iranian efforts to ‘lash out with attacks on its neighbors, and on Americans and American interests in the Middle East.’ Each prediction was as wrong, as it was biased in favor of Tehran.”

They expressed their concerns about what access Gordon may have to classified information. As Gordon would most likely serve a senior role in a Harris Administration, his connections to Iran would represent a serious national security threat, particularly in the aftermath of escalations with Iran after Israel carried out an assassination of a top Hamas leader who was in Tehran.
