The far-left gun control group Giffords is preparing to donate $15 million to the presidential campaign of Vice President Kamala Harris (D-Calif.), as the group’s cofounder is considered one of the most likely picks for Harris’ running mate.
According to the Washington Free Beacon, the executive director of Giffords, Emma Brown, boasted about the massive donation while refusing to comment on the ongoing vice presidential speculation.
“The [gun violence] issue is actually moving votes and able to really affect electoral outcomes,” said Brown. “So we are planning to use our resources this year, particularly the $15 million, to support gun safety champions and to communicate directly with voters who are uniquely mobilized by guns in key battleground races across the country.”
Giffords, named after former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.), was founded by Giffords and her husband Mark Kelly (D-Ariz.), a former astronaut who is currently serving as the junior United States Senator from Arizona. Kelly is widely considered to be on the shortlist of candidates for Harris’ running mate, alongside others such as North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper (D-N.C.), Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro (D-Penn.), Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker (D-Ill.), and Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear (D-Ky.), among others.
Although gun control remains widely unpopular with the American people, Democrats have sought to double down on their anti-gun stance, with Harris especially being outspoken about her determination to restrict Second Amendment rights. Harris recently declared that her campaign will be about “the freedom to be safe from gun violence,” and confirming in a speech to the American Federation of Teachers that “we want to ban assault weapons.”
Harris, who became the Democratic Party’s presumptive nominee less than one week after Joe Biden announced he would be withdrawing from the race, is expected to announce her running mate sometime before the Democratic National Convention (DNC), which takes place in Chicago from August 19th to August 22nd.
