House of Representatives Unanimously Approves Task Force to Investigate Trump Assassination Attempt

On Wednesday, the United States House of Representatives passed a resolution to establish a task force that will investigate the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump.

As reported by the Daily Caller, H.R. 1367 was introduced by Congressman Mike Kelly (R-Penn.) and was supported by both Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (R-La.) and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.). The resolution passed unanimously, with 416 votes in favor and zero votes against it.

Lawmakers from both sides of the aisle have been demanding answers as to why there were so many security failures at the rally on July 13th, leading to congressional testimony by Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle on Monday. After Cheatle repeatedly dodged basic questions and was grilled by Democrats and Republicans alike, she announced her resignation on Tuesday.

“The security failures that allowed an assassination attempt on Donald Trump’s life are shocking,” said Johnson and Jeffries in a joint statement. “The task force will be empowered with subpoena authority and will move quickly to find the facts, ensure accountability, and make certain such failures never happen again.”

The task force will consist of seven Republicans and six Democrats, and will be convened “in response to bipartisan demands for answers,” Johnson and Jeffries added.

On July 13th, while President Trump was hosting a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, the 20-year-old gunman fired multiple shots from a rooftop located approximately 130 yards from the stage where Trump was speaking. In dramatic video that was livestreamed to the whole world, President Trump’s speech was interrupted as he grabbed his ear, then quickly ducked as shots began ringing out before Secret Service agents surrounded him. The first bullet narrowly missed his head and grazed his right ear. As he got back on his feet and the agents prepared to take him to safety, he turned to the crowd and raised a fist to show that he was alright, drawing thunderous applause.

The crossfire ultimately killed 50-year-old Corey Comperatore, who died using his body to shield his family from gunfire. Two others were seriously injured but have since stabilized.
