Joe Biden plans to announce his withdrawal from the presidential race as early as Saturday, but most likely on Sunday, longtime journalist Mark Halperin is reporting.
Biden’s agreement to step down was “brokered by Nancy Pelosi and others,” Halperin reported during a live 2Way broadcast posted on Youtube.
Democrat calls for Biden to step down reached a fever pitch last week, but briefly went quiet after the shocking assassination attempt against Donald Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania Saturday. The chatter resumed in earnest this week with more top Democrats joining the chorus, and scheming behind the scenes.
Biden’s announcement speech, according to Halperin’s multiple sources in “Biden world” is being written by presidential biographer Jon Meacham.
Biden is reportedly not resigning from the presidency and not endorsing Kamala Harris.
Instead, the state of play involves an open convention with Harris and about three other top Democrats vying for the nomination. Harris is said to be vetting at least four possible running mates, including Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, and Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro.
Other Democrats thinking about jumping in the race include California Governor Gavin Newsom, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, and Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker.
Many are questioning how Biden can be declared unfit to run for the presidency, but still remain in office.
How Democrats plan to change the rules this late in the game “is very much TBD” (to be determined), Halperin said, but “there is an understanding that super delegates will not be allowed to vote on 1st ballot” at the Democrat National Convention.
Democrats are apparently evenly split on how Harris would do against Trump, with one half thinking she’s stronger than Biden, and the other half thinking she’s much weaker.
Update:
CBS News correspondent Robert Costa is reporting that Jon Meacham reached out to him via text to deny Halperin’s report.
“The report about my doing anything with a speech is totally false,” he said.
Last week, there were reports that Democrat operatives were about to launch a “coordinated Democrat rebellion” against Biden, but those plans may have been put on hold after the assassination attempt on Trump’s life in Pennsylvania.
Some say that “brutal” propaganda media assault has resumed with a vengeance now.
Trump-supporting entrepreneur David Sacks called Halperin’s report “a strategic leak designed to build momentum against President Biden, who doesn’t want to go.”
“What else can one call this but a coup?” Sacks asked on X.
Team Biden is reportedly “furious” that the cutthroats in their own party are trying to oust him while he convalesces at his beach home in Delaware.
“Sources close to President Biden tell me tonight they’re *furious* that while the president is trying to recover from Covid in Rehoboth, a pressure campaign keeps picking up speed,” Costa reported on X Thursday. “Lots of anger toward some donors for talking of $ drying up if he doesn’t quit, toward what they see as muted support from Pres. Obama, and toward Dem leaders who one source says are “hiding” behind statements. If they want him out, they’ll have to push, source adds. Feels disrespected. Still, a fluid moment and no one has figured out an effective way to quiet this drift of nervous Democrats away from Biden and know many Dems want Biden to just break at some point soon.”
Biden’s campaign manager Jen O’Malley Dillon told MSNBC’s Morning Joe Friday morning that “absolutely the president is in this race.” Dillon added: “Joe Biden is more committed than ever to beat Donald Trump, and we believe on this campaign we are built for the close election that we are in, and we see the path forward.”
Biden put a statement Friday making clear that he has no intention of leaving the race. Biden also took the opportunity to ludicrously slam Trump for having a “dark vision” and not using his RNC platform to tout the Heritage Foundation’s presidential transition “Project 2025” (which the former president claims he knows nothing about and hasn’t endorsed).
