On Wednesday, far-left Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) filed articles of impeachment against Supreme Court Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito, claiming with no evidence that they are guilty of “unchecked corruption.”
As reported by Fox News, Ocasio-Cortez filed three articles of impeachment against Justice Thomas and two articles against Justice Alito. She has accused Justice Thomas of receiving allegedly undisclosed gifts from conservative donors, while also targeting Justice Alito over several flags he has been seeing flying outside his house, including a flag that says “Appeal to Heaven.”
“The unchecked corruption crisis on the Supreme Court has now spiraled into a Constitutional crisis threatening American democracy writ large,” she wrote in a statement. “Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito’s pattern of refusal to recuse from consequential matters before the court in which they hold widely documented financial and personal entanglements constitutes a grave threat to American rule of law, the integrity of our democracy, and one of the clearest cases for which the tool of impeachment was designed.”
Cortez had first threatened to file the impeachment articles last week, following the Supreme Court’s 6-3 ruling in favor of former President Donald Trump on the question of presidential immunity as he faces multiple politically-motivated prosecutions. As such, despite the reasons Cortez gave upon filing the articles, it is widely believed that the real motivation behind her actions was merely disagreement with the court’s ruling.
“The Supreme Court has become consumed by a corruption crisis beyond its control,” Ocasio-Cortez claimed, again without evidence, on X after the decision. “Today’s ruling represents an assault on American democracy. It is up to Congress to defend our nation from this authoritarian capture. I intend on filing articles of impeachment upon our return.”
Ever since President Trump successfully confirmed three new Supreme Court justices, thus expanding the court’s Republican-appointed majority to 6 out of 9, Democrats have frequently targeted the court through such threats as impeachment or failed efforts to expand the size of the court.
