AOC Threatens to Impeach Supreme Court Justices Over Immunity Ruling

On Monday, Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) threatened to file articles of impeachment against several Supreme Court justices following the court’s ruling on presidential immunity for former President Donald Trump.

As The Daily Wire reports, Ocasio-Cortez falsely claimed in a post on X that “the Supreme Court has become consumed by a corruption crisis beyond its control.”

“Today’s ruling represents an assault on American democracy,” she continued. “It is up to Congress to defend our nation from this authoritarian capture. I intend on filing articles of impeachment upon our return.”

Ocasio-Cortez’s tirade was in response to the court’s ruling on Monday in the case Trump v. United States, regarding the former president’s claims of presidential immunity in the context of multiple criminal prosecutions against him. The former president’s legal team asserted that presidential immunity protected him against the charges he faces from Special Counsel Jack Smith, in two separate cases in Washington D.C. and Florida, as well as charges brought by Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis in Georgia.

In a 6-3 ruling, the court’s conservative majority sided with President Trump.

“The President is not above the law,” the court’s ruling declared. “But under our system of separated powers, the President may not be prosecuted for exercising his core constitutional powers, and he is entitled to at least presumptive immunity from prosecution for his official acts.”

The ruling greatly hinders Smith’s and Willis’ cases, making them all but impossible to prosecute. It also guarantees that the cases will not go to trial ahead of the November election. The ruling does not impact President Trump’s conviction in Manhattan earlier this year, as those charges were related to actions he allegedly took before he was president.

Ocasio-Cortez’s threats were met with widespread criticism and mockery on social media. Conservative legal commentator AG Hamilton said that “filing articles of impeachment against SCOTUS because they ruled in a way you don’t like is an actual assault on our system. It’s indicative of someone who does not take their oath to the Constitution seriously and doesn’t belong anywhere near a position of authority.”

Another commentator, attorney Julie Hamill, declared the congresswoman’s post to be “dangerous insurrection talk from a woman who has never gone to law school and learned about the three branches of government while on the job in Congress.”

One of Ocasio-Cortez’s colleagues, Congressman Greg Murphy (R-N.C.) told her to “just be quiet,” adding that “people are so damn tired of the theatrics.”
