The ex-wife of Microsoft founder Bill Gates has pledged to donate at least $1 billion to pro-abortion groups and other far-left organizations over the course of the next two years.
As reported by the Daily Caller, the announcement was made on Tuesday by Pivotal Ventures, Melinda Gates’ new charity, that it would spend money to oppose “the rollback of women’s rights and headwinds to social progress in the U.S. and around the world.” The group designated $200 million to be given specifically to American groups that support “advanc[ing] women’s power and protect[ing] their rights, including reproductive freedom.”
“For too long, a lack of money has forced organizations fighting for women’s rights into a defensive posture while the enemies of progress play offense,” said Gates in her own statement. “I want to help even the match.”
Among the groups that will be receiving money from Gates are the National Women’s Law Center (NWLC), the Center for Reproductive Rights (CRR), and the Collaborative for Gender + Reproductive Equity (CGRE).
The NWLC had previously set up its own “abortion access legal defense fund” in the aftermath of the Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization in 2022, which overturned Roe v. Wade and eliminated the national “right” to an abortion by instead turning the issue back to the states. NWLC’s fund is meant to provide funding for the legal fees of anyone who violates state law by traveling from an anti-abortion state to a pro-abortion state.
The CRR launched its own five-year plan in 2021 to target anti-abortion laws around the world, primarily through lawsuits. The group claims to have loosened pro-life laws in 17 different foreign countries.
The CGRE focuses on trying to set up a network of “people protecting abortion access” and connecting them to “other priorities of low income women and women of color,” such as voting rights or the economy. The group released a statement celebrating Gates’ donation, saying that the group “is honored to have received a grant from Melinda French Gates to supercharge our work to advance women’s power and protect women’s rights in the U.S.”
Gates made her wealth almost entirely from her divorce from Bill, taking $12.5 billion from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation as part of her exit agreement following their separation.
