Bill and Hillary Clinton to Lead Fundraiser for Biden in D.C.

Former President Bill Clinton and former First Lady Hillary Clinton will headline a major fundraiser for Joe Biden’s re-election campaign in Washington D.C. this June.

According to Axios, the fundraiser in late June will be hosted by former Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe (D-Va.). The event follows a previous similar event in April that featured Biden alongside Bill Clinton and former President Barack Obama in New York City, hosted by late night talk host Stephen Colbert. Although the New York event raised $26 million for Biden’s campaign, a fundraiser hosted by former President Donald Trump in Florida that same week netted nearly twice as much, at $50 million.

The June 18th event will be hosted at McAuliffe’s home in McLean, Virginia. In addition to the Clintons, First Lady Jill Biden will also be in attendance. The event will be split into two parts, first featuring a reception that will then be followed by a more exclusive dinner for the highest-paying donors.

Another fundraiser is planned for mid-June in Los Angeles; it will once again feature Biden, Clinton, and Obama, and will be hosted by actor George Clooney. Clooney recently came under scrutiny after it was revealed that his wife Amal had been part of the advisory board that recommended that the International Criminal Court (ICC) issue an arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The Biden campaign is increasingly turning to glamorous, high-dollar fundraisers to offset President Trump’s financial performance, as the 45th president is surging in fundraising due to a strong showing by small-dollar donors. In the month of April, Trump’s fundraising numbers surpassed Biden’s for the first time in the 2024 campaign, with the former president raising more money overall than the incumbent president; while the Democratic National Committee (DNC) raised $51 million in April, the Trump campaign and the Republican National Committee (RNC) raised $76 million.

The rise in fundraising for both campaigns highlights the rising tension of the campaign season, with just over five months left before the November election. President Trump has seen his fundraising numbers rise due in large part to the numerous legal cases against him, which he says are politically motivated by a weaponized Department of Justice (DOJ).

Meanwhile, both candidates are preparing for the first official debate; set to take place in Atlanta, Georgia on June 27th, it will be the earliest general election debate in modern history, and the first to take place before either candidate officially receives their parties’ nominations at their respective national conventions.
