On Thursday, the House of Representatives passed a bill to repeal a law that allows illegal aliens to vote in local elections in Washington D.C. It passed with a majority of Democrats voting against it.
As Fox News reports, the bill passed with 262 votes in favor and 143 against; all Republicans in the chamber were joined by 52 Democrats, while the remaining 143 Democrats voted against it.
The law in question was first passed by the D.C. city council in 2022, and had survived a legal challenge earlier this year.
Republicans in support of the bill voiced concerns about the national security implications of letting illegal foreigners have a role in deciding the outcome of elections in the United States. Others pointed to the blatant partisanship of the law, with illegals overwhelmingly voting in favor of Democrats.
“What we’re doing is, we are talking about passing a law that prohibits citizens of foreign countries from voting in elections in D.C.,” said Congressman Garret Graves (R-La.) during debate on the bill. “It prohibits people that are here illegally from voting in elections. It prohibits spies from China from voting in elections. It prohibits people that are here from Russia that have wishes of ill will in the United States from voting in the elections in D.C.”
Democrats in defense of the bill outright denied that illegals are voting in elections, despite the law being passed for that explicit purpose. Congressman Jamie Raskin (D-Md.), claimed with no evidence that “we were not able to find any evidence that there were any undocumented people” casting votes in D.C. elections.
“In other words, the district’s use of this practice for local elections and local government functions appears to be in accord with the way it’s always been used, which is for permanent residents who are part of the community, who are on the pathway to citizenship,” Raskin continued.
The bill to repeal the D.C. law marks the latest example of the Republican Party’s efforts to crack down on voter fraud, with roughly 5 months left before the November general election. Election integrity and voter fraud remain top concerns for most American voters in 2024, following widespread and credible allegations of systematic voter fraud that likely altered the results of the 2020 presidential election.
American citizens should be voting for other American citizens for all public offices.
