U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) isn’t exactly laying low after surviving a Motion to Vacate his seat.
Johnson held a press conference on Tuesday across the street from the Manhattan courthouse where former president Donald Trump is facing felony charges over an alleged hush money scheme.
The Associated Press reports that the Speaker of the House is part of a growing list of Republican lawmakers who are decrying what they call a “sham trial” and misuse of the justice system to persecute the presumptive GOP presidential nominee.
Johnson condemned what he called, “This ridiculous prosecution that is not about justice,” saying, “It’s all about politics.”
I’m disgusted by what’s happening in the sham trial against President Trump.
The American people can see it’s politically motivated.

But not everyone is convinced that Speaker Johnson is acting from a place of loyalty to Trump or to the American people.
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) says, Johnson could stop the weaponization of the justice system through the power of the purse by defunding Special Counsel Jack Smith’s crusade against Trump.
Greene says she wants to know why Johnson has failed to wield his gavel to pass her legislation that would end Jack Smith’s witch hunt.

Greene’s statement raises questions about whether Speaker Johnson is serious about addressing issues that directly affect the American people and the nation as a whole or whether he is simply trying to gain favor with the potential next president.
