On Sunday, Republicans in the House of Representatives announced articles of impeachment against Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, setting up another impeachment showdown in Congress.
As reported by Just The News, the first article accuses Mayorkas of participating in a “willful and systemic refusal to comply with the law” over a lack of enforcement of the southern border, while the second article accuses him of breaching the public’s trust.
Mayorkas has “repeatedly violated laws enacted by Congress regarding immigration and border security,” the articles state, referring to the historic surge of illegal aliens coming across the border on Mayorkas’ watch, which has led to a near-total breakdown of the border and a rise in crime, drug use, and homelessness.
The articles are scheduled for markup on Tuesday by the House Homeland Security Committee, at which point the articles will most likely be sent to the House floor for a full vote. The introduction of the articles will be the culmination of a year-long investigation into Mayorkas by House Republicans which began shortly after the GOP retook control of the lower chamber in the 2022 midterms.
“Congress has a duty to see that the executive branch implements and enforces the laws we have passed,” said Congressman Mark Green (R-Tenn.), Chairman of the Homeland Security Committee. “Yet Secretary Mayorkas has repeatedly refused to do so.”
If a majority of the House votes in favor of impeaching Mayorkas, he will become only the second Cabinet Secretary in American history to ever be impeached, after Secretary of War William Belkanp in 1876. Just as with the impeachment of a president, Mayorkas would then go on trial before the United States Senate, where a conviction is unlikely due to the Democratic majority in that chamber.
