Israel Blames Islamic Jihad For Hospital Massacre in Gaza

A Gaza City hospital packed with wounded Palestinians was bombed Tuesday, reportedly killing up to 500 people. The Hamas-run Health Ministry claims an Israeli airstrike hit the hospital, but Israeli authorities deny responsibility, saying it was a misfired Islamic Jihad rocket. [On Wednesday, reports indicated that the misfired rocket hit the hospital parking lot and the death toll was substantially lower than 500.].

Photos and video from Al-Ahli Hospital show the horrific aftermath.

Many people had been seeking shelter in the hospital when it was hit, the Hamas government claimed.

“We were operating in the hospital, there was a strong explosion, and the ceiling fell on the operating room. This is a massacre,” said Dr. Ghassan Abu Sittah, a Doctors Without Borders doctor in Gaza in a statement.

A Palestinian Civil Defense official told Al Jazeera that what he witnessed at the scene of the attack was “indescribable.”

“What happened was a major massacre in every sense of the word, which is genocide against our people, and the world must take action,” spokesperson Major Mahmoud Basal said.

The IDF said in a statement that an analysis “an operational systems indicates that a barrage of rockets was fired by terrorists in Gaza, passing in close proximity to the Al Ahli hospital in Gaza at the time it was hit.”

“Intelligence from multiple sources we have in our hands indicates that Islamic Jihad is responsible for the failed rocket launch which hit the hospital in Gaza,” the statement added.

Israel’s Foreign Ministry released a video allegedly showing that an enemy rocket barrage was passing over the hospital toward Israel when the hospital was hit.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also said in a statement posted onto X that the evidence points to a Hamas misfire.

“An analysis of IDF operational systems indicates that a barrage of rockets was fired by terrorists in Gaza, passing in close proximity to the Al Ahli hospital in Gaza at the time it was hit,” Netanyahu said. “Intelligence from multiple sources we have in our hands indicates that Islamic Jihad is responsible for the failed rocket launch which hit the hospital in Gaza.”

According to some reports, the misifired rocket detonated a stockpile of munitions held on the hospital grounds. Hamas is known to use hospitals as bunkers and rocket launching pads, knowing they will be spared retaliatory air strikes.

The geolocating platform Geoconfirm did an analysis of the missile strike and concluded that it was “launched by Palestinian Groups exploded mid-air and one of the pieces fell on the Al-Ahli Arab Hospital’s yard.”

In the wake of the Al-Ahli Hospital bombing, hundreds of demonstrators in Jordan stormed the Israeli embassy in Amman.

Videos on X show an angry mob surrounding the building and attempting to force their way inside.

Later on, the embassy was set ablaze.

Update:

Angry protests have also erupted tonight outside of the U.S. Embassy In Beirut, Lebanon; the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad, Iraq;  the French Embassy In Tunisia; the U.S. Embassy in Tehran, Iran; the Israeli Embassy in Qatar; and French Embassy in Aden, Yemen.

Protests have also erupted in multiple cities in western nations, including the U.S.

The Hague, Netherlands:

Update:

The IDF posted audio of two Hamas operatives talking about the missile misfire. According to one of the operatives, it was fired from a cemetery behind the hospital.

Reports on Wednesday indicated that the rocket shrapnel hit the hospital parking lot and the death toll was substantially lower than 500.

Editor’s note:

According to the IDF and the Hamas operatives, the the rocket was fired by Islamic Jihad, a Palestinian Islamist paramilitary organization, not Hamas, as initially reported.
