On Wednesday, Joe Biden announced the creation of a new government program intended to combat the effects of so-called “global warming.”
As reported by Fox News, Biden signed an executive order establishing the American Climate Corps, which will recruit “a new, diverse generation” of over 20,000 government workers to be trained for jobs involving conservation, clean energy, and other climate-related projects. The program intends to prepare its workers for future jobs in either the private or public sector.
“The American Climate Corps is a new initiative that will… work on a wide range of projects that tackle climate change — including restoring coastal wetlands to protect communities from storm surges and flooding, deploying clean energy, managing forests to improve health and prevent catastrophic wildfires, implementing energy efficient solutions to cut energy bills for hardworking families, and more,” the White House said in a statement.
“All American Climate Corps programs will be paid experiences that adhere to a common set of programmatic standards, and provide pathways to high-quality employment opportunities in the public and private sectors,” the statement continued.
In addition to the federal program, similar climate-focused programs will be rolled out at the state level in five states: Arizona, Maryland, Minnesota, North Carolina, and Utah. The state groups will serve as “implementing collaborators to ensure young people across the country are serving their communities, while participating in paid opportunities and working on projects to tackle climate change.”
The Biden Administration’s decision comes after a massive pressure campaign urging the creation of such a corps, led by the Sunrise Movement and featuring a coalition of over 50 left-wing environmental groups. Such an idea was also promoted by progressive members of Congress, including Senator Ed Markey (D-Mass.) and Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.).
