Washington Post Praises Biden Speech Against ‘MAGA Republicans’

On Monday, a column in the Washington Post, written by NeverTrump commentator Max Boot, declared that Biden’s controversial and widely-panned speech at Independence Hall was “smart” and “well-justified.”

Breitbart reports that the article, titled “The GOP reaction to Biden’s speech shows that his anti-MAGA strategy is working,” declares that Biden’s presidency has been one of the “most successful” in decades. Boot cited as proof of his claims such instances as measures taken by Biden, either legislatively or otherwise, to “stimulate the economy, build infrastructure, fund semiconductor production, pay for veterans’ health programs, regulate gun sales, lower prescription drug prices and roll back greenhouse gas emissions.”

Biden, Boot says, “has gotten so much of his agenda enacted, and with the midterm elections looming, he has switched to a more combative mode.” Boot also says that Biiden’s Thursday speech in Philadelphia – in which he declared that every American who voted for President Donald Trump represented a “clear and present danger” to the country – was a “well-justified expression of rage and despair about what the Republican Party has become.”

“What Biden is doing is smart, if difficult to pull off,” Boot continued. “He is attempting to draw a dividing line between those Republicans who threaten U.S. democracy and those who don’t.” In his speech, Biden claimed that his ability to occasionally work with “mainstream Republicans” is proof that the majority of the Republican base does not support President Trump or his America First agenda. However, the few bills on which Biden was able to secure Republican votes – including the gun control bill and the infrastructure bill – were widely unpopular with Republican voters, and Republicans in Congress who voted for said bills have faced heavy criticism for doing so.

Boot then doubled down on the demonizing of Trump supporters, declaring that “MAGA Republicans aren’t some fringe movement,” and that “whatever figure you use for MAGA Republicans, it’s clear that they account for tens of millions of voters and pose a major threat to our democracy.”

Boot, who once considered himself a Republican, has previously called for mass censorship of conservatives with whom he disagrees. Last year, the writer demanded that all telecommunications companies shut down the three major conservative news channels: Fox News, Newsmax, and One America News Network. Boot even compared these outlets to “foreign terrorist groups” to justify his anti-First Amendment demands, saying that “we need to shut down the influencers who radicalize people and set them on the path toward violence and sedition.”
