A far-left pro-abortion group based out of San Francisco has threatened to defy the newly-implemented bans on abortion in most southern states by setting up a floating abortion clinic in the international waters of the Gulf of Mexico.
Breitbart reports that the group PRROWESS – “Protecting Reproductive Rights Of Women Endangered by State Statutes” – announced their intentions to raise up to $20 million to build and operate the facility. Meg Autry, an abortion provider affiliated with the group, made the announcement during an interview with the local NBC affiliate.
Autry, who described abortion as her “life’s work,” predicted that the group would defeat any possible legal challenges to such a proposal.
“We have a very powerful legal team,” Autry said. “I’m sure there will be legal barriers and problems at every part of this journey.”
The plan is further detailed on PRROWESS’s website, which says that “those in the most southern parts of Mississippi, Alabama, Louisiana, and Texas may be closer to the coast than to facilities in bordering states where abortion and reproductive health care are available.”
“The clinic will be able to offer services such as contraception and point of care STI testing that may not be offered at the closest land facilities,” the statement continues.
Following the Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, the precedent set by Roe v. Wade in 1973 legalizing abortion nationwide was officially overturned, and the matter of abortion was returned to the individual states. Upon the announcement of the court’s decision, a number of Republican-led states activated so-called “trigger laws” that automatically outlawed or heavily restricted abortion.
