On Tuesday, the Biden Administration’s Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) rolled out a new website aimed at helping people find access to contraceptives and abortions, following the Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.
According to Politico, the website, ReproductiveRights.gov, was launched after the administration faced criticism from the far-left over its response (or lack thereof) to the historic ruling by the Supreme Court, with progressives claiming that the Biden White House wasn’t doing enough to shore up abortion protections. The new website shares links and information regarding options for abortion and contraception.
HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra announced that he would also be directing HHS’s Office for Civil Rights to ensure privacy for patients seeking such abortion access, and that he would also increase access to abortifacients that have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Furthermore, HHS would “work with the attorney general and the Department of Justice as they work to ensure that states may not ban medication abortion,” Becerra added in his statement.
But even these latest moves may not do enough to satisfy Biden’s far-left critics, who claim that the White House didn’t prepare enough after the initial draft of the Supreme Court’s ruling overturning Roe was first leaked back in early May. Several Democrats in both houses of Congress have publicly called for Biden to take more drastic measures, such as providing access to abortions in national parks and on other federal lands; others have advocated for expanding the size of the Supreme Court in order to put the six Republican-appointed justices into the minority.
Since the decision on Friday in the case of Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, which overturned both Roe and the 1992 ruling in Planned Parenthood v. Casey, 11 states have already implemented laws either significantly restricting or outright banning abortions. The decision allowed for such laws to take effect after the court ruled, in a 6-3 majority, that the matter of abortion should be returned to the individual states to be decided.
