Proposed Bill in Iowa Would Require Security Cameras in Public School Classrooms

A recently-proposed bill in the Iowa legislature would require public schools to install security cameras in classrooms, so that teachings in a classroom could be viewed online by parents and other guardians of the students involved.

According to NBC News, the bill, H.F. 2177, would see cameras mandated in every public school classroom except for physical education (P.E.) and special education classes. The bill was sponsored by State Representative Norlin Mommsen (R-Iowa), and is backed by most Republicans as another measure to crack down on highly politicized curriculum and other indoctrination efforts by left-wing teachers.

Representative Mommsen says his bill’s primary goal is to “increase the involvement of parents in their children’s education.” But left-wing organizations and teachers’ unions claim, with no evidence, that the bill is an attempt to suppress political dissent and intimidate teachers.

“Some politicians around the country want to limit what history our kids can learn about, what books they can read, and censor the truth of our history in some cases,” said Becky Pringle, president of the National Education Association, in an email statement. “And, now in Iowa, they want to install classroom cameras for live monitoring of teachers. Instead of wasting public funds on monitoring equipment, we should employ additional qualified professionals, reduce class sizes, and provide more programming that helps students acquire the skills they need.”

Similar measures have been proposed in other states recently. In Nevada, a parents’ rights group called the Nevada Family Alliance proposed a new policy that would see teachers wear body-cam footage to document what they teach to their students. In Florida, a bill similar to the Iowa legislation, H.B. 1055, would also mandate cameras in public school classrooms and would additionally require that teachers wear microphones.

These measures and other efforts are part of the broader movement to push back against far-left topics being propagated in public schools, including Critical Race Theory (CRT) and pro-transgenderism policies. CRT is a far-left and widely-debunked theory which claims that all White people are automatically racist, and that America is an inherently racist nation, while “transgenderism” is the anti-scientific notion that there are more than two genders, and that any individual can suddenly change their gender whenever they choose.
