Chris Cuomo Faces Calls to Resign from CNN After Advising His Brother on Scandal Fallout

CNN anchor Chris Cuomo is facing mounting calls to resign from his job at CNN, after recently admitting to directly advising his brother, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo (D-N.Y.), on how to deal with growing scandals in his administration, Fox News reports.

Cuomo admitted on his Thursday night show that he had directly provided advice to his older brother in the same capacity as a senior adviser, as the embattled governor dealt with multiple allegations of sexual harassment and assault, as well as the fallout from the revelation that his administration deliberately covered up the true number of nursing home deaths due to the coronavirus.

“Like you, I bet, my family means everything to me,” the younger Cuomo said in his attempted explanation. “And I am fiercely loyal to them. I’m family first, job second…I know where the line is.”

In response, even numerous left-wing journalists joined in on the chorus of criticism, with the overwhelming consensus being that Cuomo was incapable of balancing his personal loyalties to his professional duties.

Sergio Quintana, a Bay Area reporter for NBC, said that “he does NOT know where that line is.” Lydia Moynihan of the New York Post made a statement similar to Quintana’s, posting clips and stills from the numerous softball interviews that Cuomo gave to his older brother last year, all of which involved him blindly praising his brother’s virus response. The Washington Post’s Josh Dawsey similarly noted that Cuomo’s explanation “did not mention repeated interviews of his brother last spring where he heaped praise on his brother’s COVID response.”

Even one of Cuomo’s former colleagues, ex-CNN anchor Soledad O’Brien, was critical of Cuomo on social media, calling his justification “kinda BS-ish.”

The wave of criticism and calls for his firing came after a report from the Washington Post, which revealed that Chris Cuomo had been a part of conference calls with the governor and his senior advisers, providing him direct strategic counseling on how to navigate the multiple scandals and their fallout. Cuomo allegedly was among the most vocal individuals who insisted that his brother should refuse to resign. The older Cuomo is currently facing multiple investigations for his conduct, including an impeachment inquiry by the New York State Assembly, with Democrats and Republicans across the board united in calling for his removal from office.
