Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) was booed and heckled as a “traitor” at the Utah Republican Party’s organizing convention Saturday, The Hill reported.
Video of the speech published by The Salt Lake Tribune captured the crowd’s reaction to Romney’s speech.
The boos grew louder as Romney, a frequent critic of former President Trump said “now you know me as a person who says what he thinks and I don’t hide the fact that I wasn’t a fan of our last president’s character issues.”
“So, what do you think about President Biden’s first 100 days?” Romney asked.
“You can boo all you like,” Romney, who voted to impeach Trump twice, told the more than the 2,100 Republican delegates in attendance.
“You’re terrible!” a man shouted.
As the boos grew louder, Romney asked, “Aren’t you embarrassed?”
However, some attendees could be seen standing and applauding and Romney pointed to those and thanked them.
Utah GOP Chairman Derek Brown stood and took the podium and asked the crowd to show respect for Romney, who proceeded to finish his speech, The Hill reported.
Later at the convention delegates narrowly rejected a resolution to censure Romney for his impeachment votes after a heated debate on a 798-711 vote.
